What is the contractors license exam and how do I prepare for it?

After your application for an original contractors license is approved, you must pass the Contractors State License Board (CSLB)'s multiple choice exam to receive your license.

You are responsible for scheduling your own exam after your application is approved.

Once your application has been approved and referred for testing, the Notice to Schedule for Examination will be mailed to you with detailed information regarding the self-scheduling of your exam through PSI Exams. You can sign up for your exam appointment online or by telephone at (877) 392-6422.

All exams are offered in English and test translation is available upon request. Please make sure to mark the need for translation on your "Application for Original Contractors License" initial submission to avoid any delays in processing.

  • Participants are given 3.5 hours to complete each exam
  • Exams are taken on a computer and consist of multiple-choice questions
