How do I verify a seller's permit for a resale certificate?
You can only accept a resale certificate from customer with a valid seller's permit.
When a seller accepts a valid resale certificate in good faith and in a timely manner, the seller does not owe tax on that sale. If a customer presents a resale certificate to you, you may want to verify their seller's permit. The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration offers 2 ways to check if a resale certificate is valid:
- Verify the seller's permit through the CDTFA online portal
- Call the CDTFA's toll free number: 1 (888) 225-5263
