Do I need to register my business?
LLCs, LPs, and LLPs are all required to register with the California Secretary of State.
Not all business structures are required to register with the California Secretary of State. If you choose to structure your business as a Limited Liability Company (LLC), Limited Partnership (LP), or Limited Liability Partnership (LLP) you must register with the California Secretary of State (SOS). Sole proprietors and partnerships do not need to register.
There are many different types of LLCs, LPs, and LLPs. We recommend working with an attorney or tax expert to understand the nuances between the different filing options for each.
✅ Register your Business
Congratulations! You've determined your business structure, picked its name, and filed an FBN (if applicable). Now, it's time to register your business with the California Secretary of State.
You can register your business online or by mail.
Once the SOS has processed your filing, you will need to submit a Statement of Information within 90 days. This can be done online or by mail. If you want to submit online, log into your account, search your entity name, and find a Statement of Information button on the right.
