You must be at least 18 years old, have a Social Security number, and 4 years of previous experience.
While there are no specific education requirements involved in procuring your Contractor's License, you must be:
- At least 18 years old
- Have a Social Security number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number and
- Be able to demonstrate 4 years of experience at the level of:
- Journeyman
- Foreman
- Supervisor
- Owner-builder
The experience requirement must be documented by a qualified individual, such as a former employer, homeowner, or other journeyman.
In certain cases, specialized training or an approved apprenticeship can substitute for up to 1.5 years of experience.
To report and confirm the work experience requirement to become a licensed contractor, include a Certification of Work Experience form when submitting an "Application for Original Contractor License," to the Contractors State License Board.
